Punjab Elections: 598 Candidates File Nominations for 13 Parliament Segments
As the nomination process for the upcoming elections in Punjab concluded on Tuesday, a total of 598 candidates have filed their nominations for the 13 parliament segments in the state. Punjab’s chief electoral officer, Sibin C, reported that 226 nominations were filed on the last day alone.
Scheduled for June 1, the elections in Punjab will mark the final and seventh phase of the electoral process. The nomination process began on May 7, leading to a flurry of submissions across various constituencies.
Notable figures include Emaan Singh Mann from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), son of party president Simranjeet Singh Mann, who is seeking re-election from the Amritsar constituency. Additionally, Harpal Singh of SAD (Amritsar) and radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, contesting independently, have filed their papers in their respective constituencies.
Across different segments, nominations have poured in, with significant entries from Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, and Anandpur Sahib. Scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for May 15, with candidates having until May 17 to withdraw their nominations.
The diverse array of candidates, including independents and representatives from major political parties, sets the stage for a competitive electoral contest in Punjab.
