Supreme Court Mulls Interim Bail for Arvind Kejriwal Amidst Election Buzz
  • PublishedMay 3, 2024

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has signaled the possibility of granting interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in light of the upcoming elections. The court has directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to draft potential bail conditions for Kejriwal ahead of the hearing scheduled for Tuesday, May 7.

Emphasizing the need for transparency, the bench, comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, cautioned against presumptions regarding the bail outcome. They urged both parties to remain open-minded, ensuring no surprises during proceedings.

The court specifically instructed the ED to assess whether Kejriwal should continue signing files given his official position. This development follows Kejriwal’s arrest on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to Delhi’s former excise policy, with all previous bail pleas being denied.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court dismissed a plea challenging Kejriwal’s arrest, deeming it “not maintainable.” The court highlighted Kejriwal’s capacity to seek legal recourse through appropriate channels.

Kejriwal’s arrest has fueled political tensions, with the BJP calling for his resignation. Despite his incarceration, Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, has actively participated in the Aam Aadmi Party’s election campaigning.

As the legal battle unfolds, Kejriwal’s political fate remains uncertain, with the apex court poised to make a crucial decision amidst the electoral fervor.
