BJP’s Decision to Field Brij Bhushan’s Son Sparks Outcry Among Wrestlers
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) selection of Karan Bhushan Singh, son of six-time MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as its candidate from the Kaiserganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh has ignited controversy, drawing sharp criticism from the wrestling community. Wrestlers, who had previously protested against Brij Bhushan over alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers, expressed dismay at Karan’s candidacy.
Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik condemned the decision, lamenting the lack of justice for female athletes. She questioned the government’s stance and accused it of prioritizing political gains over accountability. The appointment of Karan, who was elected as the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association president in February, reignited frustrations among wrestlers who felt betrayed by the lack of resolution in their grievances.
The decision prompted outrage from various quarters, with former wrestler Jitender Kumar labeling it a “stab in the back” for the protesting athletes. Bajrang Punia, a Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist, criticized the BJP’s choice, denouncing it as a reflection of the country’s misfortune and questioning the party’s commitment to addressing the concerns of athletes.
The controversy surrounding Brij Bhushan, who faces charges of stalking and sexual harassment, has further intensified the backlash against Karan’s candidature. Despite ongoing legal proceedings, the BJP’s decision to field Karan has reignited debates on accountability and justice within the sporting community.
