‘ ‘Chalo Delhi’ Protest: Inconclusive Talks Prompt Massive March with Security Measures Tightened
  • PublishedFebruary 13, 2024

Farmers, predominantly from Punjab, accompanied by counterparts from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are set to launch the ‘Chalo Delhi’ march after their recent talks with Union ministers remained inconclusive. Despite claims by Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda of a consensus on most issues, farmers remain steadfast in their plan to march on Tuesday, causing potential gridlock in Delhi NCR.

Led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, the protest aims to press the Centre to address key demands, including a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for crops. The legal assurance of MSP stands as the primary catalyst for the farmers’ protest, alongside calls for the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations and farm debt waivers.

The ‘Chalo Delhi’ march, announced last week, emphasizes conditions such as legal MSP guarantees, pensions for farmers and laborers, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Security measures at the Singh, Tikri, and Ghazipur borders include cement barricades, metal nails, and barriers to manage vehicular movement and maintain peace in the national capital.

With Section 144 imposed at Uttar Pradesh borders and over 50,000 security personnel deployed, concerns are rising over potential disruptions. Internet and bulk SMS services have been suspended in seven districts to curb misinformation and maintain law and order during the anticipated protests on February 13. The inconclusive talks have heightened tensions, setting the stage for a significant and closely monitored demonstration.
