Supreme Court Takes Reins in Calcutta HC Judges’ Public Feud over Fake Caste Certificates
In an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court today transferred to itself a case related to alleged irregularities in MBBS admissions in West Bengal after two Calcutta High Court judges passed conflicting orders, publicly raising accusations against each other.
A five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, stayed all proceedings in both courts and demanded a status report from the West Bengal government on its investigation into fake caste certificates. The hearing has been adjourned for three weeks.
This dramatic turn of events follows heated exchanges between Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who ordered a CBI probe into the certificates, and Justice Soumen Sen, who stayed that order. The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter, highlighting the need to maintain judicial decorum and ensure a fair investigation.
“We have taken charge now,” the Bench declared, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the judiciary’s integrity and delivering justice in this sensitive case.
