Key Plaintiff in Land Dispute Case Over Gyanvapi Mosque Passes Away
  • PublishedDecember 11, 2023

Harihar Pandey, a key figure in the 1991 Gyanvapi case, passed away at the age of 77 while receiving treatment at BHU Hospital. Pandey, a plaintiff seeking the removal of Gyanvapi mosque from ‘Adi Vishweshwar temple’ land, was a pivotal member of the Kashi Gyanvapi Mukti Andolan.

The civil suit, ongoing since 1991, aims to restore the Gyanvapi land adjacent to Kashi Vishwanath temple. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is set to submit a report today before the Varanasi district court on the scientific survey of Gyanvapi mosque, determining its origins.

This survey, initiated following court orders, holds significance in understanding the structure’s history. The court-ordered inquiry strives for justice for both Hindu and Muslim sides in this longstanding dispute.
