Health Experts Warn Against Prolonged Mobile Phone Use on Toilets
  • PublishedFebruary 24, 2025

Medical professionals are raising concerns about the rising incidence of hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, linking these conditions to extended periods spent on the toilet, often due to mobile phone usage. Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, a senior robotic and laparoscopic surgeon from Gleneagles, Mumbai, highlighted this issue during the 74th Foundation Day of ESIC Hospital, Okhla, emphasizing that lifestyle habits, including excessive phone use in restrooms, contribute significantly to these health problems.

At ESIC Hospital, over 500 cases of hemorrhoids and fistulas were reported in a single year, according to Dr. Ravi Ranjan, a surgery specialist. He noted that poor lifestyle choices, such as low water intake, consumption of junk food, and prolonged toilet sitting with mobile phones, are contributing factors.

Chronic constipation resulting from a poor diet and extended toilet sitting creates a cycle leading to painful inflammation, potentially causing hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, explained Dr. Birbal from Marengo Asia Hospital.

Health professionals recommend the following preventive measures:

Adopt a Fiber-Rich Diet: Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to promote regular bowel movements.

Limit Time on the Toilet: Avoid using mobile phones or other distractions that extend toilet sessions.

Stay Hydrated: Adequate water intake helps prevent constipation.

By implementing these lifestyle changes, individuals can reduce the risk of developing hemorrhoids and anal fistulas.
