Falsely Implicated: Sanjay Roy Speaks After RG Kar Conviction
Following his conviction for the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, claimed he was falsely implicated. Addressing the Sealdah court, Roy alleged, “I have not done this. Those who have are being let go. One IPS involved.” Despite CCTV footage showing him near the crime scene, Roy maintained his innocence.
The court, under Judge Anirban Das, informed Roy he could speak further on Monday when his sentence would be announced. The verdict, delivered after a two-month in-camera trial, found Roy guilty under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which could result in the death penalty or life imprisonment.
The victim’s parents expressed gratitude for the verdict, while junior doctors and investigators called for a broader probe, suspecting a larger conspiracy behind the crime that shocked the nation.
