Malaysian Court Orders Return of Swatch Watches Seized Over LGBTQ Designs.
  • PublishedNovember 25, 2024

In a landmark ruling, the Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered the Malaysian government to return rainbow-colored watches and accessories made by Swatch Group that were seized last year for featuring designs celebrating LGBTQ rights. The court directed the return of the items within 14 days.

The watches, confiscated on the grounds of allegedly promoting LGBTQ themes, were deemed by authorities as potentially harmful to morality and public interest. Following the seizure, the government had banned any LGBTQ references on Swatch products, including boxes, wrappers, and accessories, amidst rising concerns over intolerance toward the LGBTQ community in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

Swatch Group challenged the legality of the seizure, arguing that it caused reputational harm and violated their rights. The court’s decision marks a significant development in the ongoing debate over LGBTQ representation and freedoms in Malaysia.

Government prosecutor Mohammad Sallehuddin Md Ali confirmed the ruling, stating, “The court ordered the items to be returned, with no costs imposed.” Swatch Group’s legal representatives declined to comment on the decision.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail acknowledged the court’s verdict, emphasizing that the government respects the decision and will review the full judgment before determining whether to appeal.

This case has drawn global attention, spotlighting the tension between artistic expression and cultural norms in Malaysia. Rights groups view the court’s decision as a step toward greater acceptance, though challenges remain in advocating for LGBTQ inclusivity in the region.
