Bengaluru Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises to 5, DK Shivakumar Orders Crackdown on Illegal Constructions
  • PublishedOctober 23, 2024

The death toll from the Bengaluru building collapse in Hennur rose to five on Wednesday morning as rescue teams continue operations to locate those trapped under the debris. The under-construction seven-storey building collapsed amidst heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, with at least 17 people feared trapped. Over 10 people have been rescued, with five hospitalized due to severe injuries.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited the site, stating that the building was illegally constructed without proper permits. He directed officials to identify and halt all illegal structures across the city, promising strict action against those responsible, including the builder and contractor.

The collapse occurred during Bengaluru’s heaviest single-day rainfall in 25 years, which has caused widespread flooding and disruptions. Many areas, especially in the northern parts of the city, have been severely affected by waterlogging and traffic standstills.
