AAP Leader Satyendar Jain Granted Bail After Two Years of Detention.
  • PublishedOctober 18, 2024

Former Delhi Health Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendar Jain has been granted bail by the Rouse Avenue Court after spending over 18 months in custody. Jain, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 30, 2022, for alleged money laundering, was released today following a personal bond of Rs 50,000.

The court, while delivering its verdict, cited the prolonged delay in the trial and referenced the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in the Manish Sisodia case, emphasizing the right to a speedy trial as a fundamental right. “The trial is yet to begin, let alone conclude,” the court observed, pointing to the importance of individual liberty in cases governed by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Although the ED opposed the bail, arguing the seriousness of the charges, the court acknowledged that Jain had already spent significant time in custody, and the trial was unlikely to begin soon. As part of the bail conditions, Jain is prohibited from contacting any witnesses or influencing the investigation. He must also seek prior permission before traveling outside India.

Satyendar Jain joins AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh, who have also been granted bail in separate money laundering cases.

This bail order highlights the judiciary’s emphasis on the right to personal freedom and fair trial timelines, setting a significant precedent for cases under the PMLA.
