Brawl Erupts Between NDA and Opposition MPs During Waqf Bill Panel Meeting.
  • PublishedOctober 15, 2024

A confrontation between MPs from the ruling BJP and the Opposition unfolded during a meeting of the parliamentary committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Tuesday. The clash escalated into a heated exchange, prompting Opposition MPs to stage a walkout for the second consecutive day, accusing BJP MPs of using offensive language.

Tensions arose over discussions about including women in Waqf boards, with BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Dilip Saikia, and Abhijit Ganguly engaging in a verbal spat with Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. The Opposition alleged that the committee’s chairperson, Jagdambika Pal, failed to uphold proper procedures and did not intervene to address the BJP MPs’ behavior.

“The chairperson ignored the offensive language used by ruling party members, leaving us no choice but to walk out,” an Opposition MP stated.

Meanwhile, BJP members denied the allegations, asserting that Opposition members had shown disrespect to the chairperson. “They were hurling abuses at the chair, which disrupted the meeting,” claimed a BJP representative.

This disruption has added to the tension between the NDA and the Opposition as critical discussions on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill remain stalled.

The Opposition has demanded that future proceedings adhere to parliamentary norms, while the ruling party emphasized the need for constructive debate. As both sides stand firm, the continuation of discussions on the bill remains uncertain.
