Heavy Rain Paralyzes Mumbai, Schools Shut, More Showers Expected.

Mumbai and its suburbs were severely impacted by heavy rains on Wednesday, causing widespread waterlogging, disruptions in train services, and the diversion of 14 flights. One person tragically drowned in an overflowing drain in Andheri, while three people lost their lives due to lightning in Thane.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for nearby districts such as Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. Schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad remain closed today as a precautionary measure.

Despite a brief improvement after the rain intensity reduced late Wednesday night, more rainfall is expected until October 1. Floodwaters have receded in most affected areas, and flight operations at Mumbai airport have resumed. However, waterlogging on Central Railway lines between Vidyavihar and Mulund has caused delays, inconveniencing commuters.

In the eastern suburbs, Mankhurd recorded the highest rainfall at 276 mm, followed by 275 mm in Bhandup and 274 mm in Powai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has mobilized teams and de-watering pumps to address the situation, with officials closely monitoring waterlogged areas.

Mumbai residents are urged to stay indoors unless necessary, as authorities work to restore normalcy in the city.
