Kamala Harris Defends Policy Shifts, Outlines Presidential Priorities in First Major Interview
  • PublishedAugust 30, 2024

In her first in-depth interview as the Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris sat down with CNN’s Dana Bash, accompanied by her running mate, Tim Walz. The interview, conducted in Savannah, Georgia, saw Harris addressing her evolving positions on key policy issues and reaffirming her support for President Joe Biden.

Harris emphasized her commitment to strengthening the middle class, highlighting policies like increasing the child tax credit, curbing price gouging, and expanding access to affordable housing as her top priorities if elected. She also recounted the moment Biden informed her of his decision not to seek re-election, noting it was an emotional and pivotal conversation.

Defending her past policy shifts, including on fracking and immigration, Harris asserted that her core values remained unchanged. She clarified her stance on fracking, stating she does not support a ban, and emphasized her focus on balancing environmental concerns with economic growth. On immigration, Harris stressed the importance of law enforcement while recalling her experience prosecuting transnational criminal organizations.

Harris also hinted at the possibility of appointing a Republican to her cabinet, underscoring her belief in diverse perspectives within leadership.

The interview, part of Harris and Walz’s bus tour across Georgia, marks a significant moment in their campaign, coming just ahead of their first debate with former President Donald Trump. Harris’ media engagement has been limited, drawing criticism, but this interview may signal a shift towards more public appearances as the campaign intensifies. Trump’s reaction to the interview was dismissive, calling it “BORING” on his social media platform.
