The body of Chenoa Nickerson, 33, from Gilbert, Arizona, was recovered on Sunday by park rangers after she went missing during a flash flood in the Grand Canyon. Nickerson, who had been hiking along Havasu Creek, was swept away by floodwaters on Thursday afternoon. Her body was discovered by rafters near the Colorado River confluence around 11:30 a.m. and subsequently transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s office.

Nickerson’s family, in a heartfelt statement, expressed their deep grief and appreciation for the efforts of searchers and supporters. “We regret to inform you that our sweet Chenoa has been found deceased. Our hearts are heavy with grief,” the statement read. “Chenoa’s light will forever be a part of all of us, and we will ensure that her spirit continues to shine brightly. Her memory will never fade, and we will honor her by carrying forward the joy and love she brought into all of our lives.”

On Thursday, Nickerson was hiking approximately half a mile from where Havasu Creek meets the Colorado River when the flash flood struck. She was not wearing a life jacket at the time. Her husband and over 100 others were safely evacuated, thanks to the efforts of the Arizona National Guard, which was activated by Governor Katie Hobbs to assist in rescue operations.

The National Park Service and the medical examiner’s office are conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of Nickerson’s death.
