Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Sanjoy Roy Breaks Down in Court, Claims Innocence
  • PublishedAugust 24, 2024

Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, broke down in court on Friday, asserting his innocence. Arrested on August 10, Roy faced the judge as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought permission for a polygraph test. When asked why he agreed to the test, Roy tearfully claimed he was being framed, expressing hope that the lie detector would prove his innocence.

The court granted the CBI permission to conduct the polygraph test on Roy, as well as on the former principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, and five others linked to the case. These individuals include four doctors who had dinner with the victim on the night of the crime.

The heinous crime, which occurred on August 9, took place inside a seminar hall on the third floor of the chest department. The trainee doctor was found with multiple lacerations and wounds, sparking outrage and protests across the medical community. Resident doctor associations nationwide went on an 11-day strike, halting elective services, before the Supreme Court urged them to resume work.

Roy’s arrest followed the discovery of his Bluetooth headphones near the crime scene, along with pornographic content on his phone. Despite the mounting evidence, Roy maintains that he is innocent, and the upcoming polygraph test may play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.
