Indian Military Leadership Charts Future Course Under General Upendra Dwivedi’s Leadership

The Indian Army’s top leadership convened in New Delhi on Monday for a pivotal meeting chaired by General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). This marks the first high-level gathering under General Dwivedi’s leadership since he assumed the role on June 30, 2024. The meeting, continuing through August 20, saw participation from the General Officer Commanding-in-Chiefs of the Army’s seven commands.

The primary focus of the discussions was to chart the future course of the Indian Army, aligning with the government’s vision for India to emerge as a developed nation and a significant global player by 2047. The leadership articulated the Indian Army’s Vision@2047, aiming to transform into a modern, agile, adaptive, and self-reliant force, capable of deterring and winning wars in a multi-domain environment.

Key topics of discussion included the reorganization of Army and Command Headquarters, realignment of Command, Corps, and Area HQ boundaries, and the enhancement of cross-domain capabilities across land, air, cyber, and space. The leadership also emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to become more data-oriented and discussed upgrades to artillery, combat aviation, air defense, and infantry.

General Dwivedi urged all stakeholders to promote Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in indigenizing equipment and weaponry, supporting the Indian defense industry in becoming a leading global exporter. The forum also deliberated on enhancing joint operations and integration between the Army, Navy, and Air Force, while exploring initiatives to improve the quality of life for military personnel and their contributions to national development sectors.

This meeting marks a significant step towards the Indian Army’s transformation and its commitment to securing the nation’s interests in the coming decades.
