Champai Soren Hints at BJP Switch Amidst Tensions Within JMM, Unlikely to Threaten Jharkhand Government Stability
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and former Chief Minister Champai Soren has hinted at a possible exit from the party, citing “humiliation” and “insults” by party members. In an emotional post, Soren expressed dismay over his treatment and outlined three potential paths: retirement, forming a new party, or joining another party—strongly suggesting a shift to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Soren’s discontent stems from being sidelined after Hemant Soren, who he briefly replaced as Chief Minister, secured bail in a land scam case. Despite his resignation, Soren claims he was forced to step down, causing a blow to his self-respect.
Although Soren’s departure from the JMM appears imminent, it is unlikely to significantly impact the stability of the current JMM-led government. The JMM, along with its allies, holds a comfortable majority in the 81-seat assembly, with 26 seats under JMM, 16 with Congress, and one with RJD.
The BJP, however, has capitalized on Soren’s dissatisfaction, accusing the JMM of dictatorial behavior and neglecting tribal leaders outside the Soren family. BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo criticized the JMM for its treatment of Soren, framing the issue as a broader disrespect for tribal identity.
While the situation unfolds, the JMM remains confident in its position, dismissing the BJP’s efforts to destabilize the government as futile. Despite the ongoing tensions, the current government in Jharkhand appears secure for now.
