US Leads Diplomatic Efforts to Avert Major Conflict Between Israel and Lebanon
  • PublishedJuly 30, 2024

Amid escalating tensions following a deadly rocket attack on Israel’s Golan Heights, the United States is spearheading diplomatic efforts to prevent a full-scale conflict between Israel and Lebanon. The rocket attack, which tragically claimed the lives of 12 children, has heightened fears of a broader regional war.

The US is working to deter Israel from retaliating against Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, and critical infrastructure, following accusations against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, which has denied involvement. Israeli officials, while promising a strong response, are reportedly preparing for a limited military operation rather than an extensive assault.

Washington’s diplomacy aims to convince Israel to limit its retaliation, particularly avoiding strikes on densely populated areas and key infrastructure. Lebanese officials, including Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib and Deputy Parliament Speaker Elias Bou Saab, have called for restraint and warned of potential repercussions for Israel if civilian areas are targeted.

Despite these calls for caution, there is an expectation of a limited escalation from both sides. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has cautioned of severe consequences if Israel attacks Lebanon.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby reassured of America’s “ironclad” support for Israel’s security but downplayed the likelihood of an all-out war. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a “harsh” response, with the security cabinet authorizing a decisive retaliation against Hezbollah.

The situation remains tense as diplomatic negotiations continue to manage and contain the crisis.
