Bangladesh Quota Protesters Announce Nationwide Shutdown on Thursday

Bangladesh Quota Protesters Announce Nationwide Shutdown on Thursday
  • PublishedJuly 18, 2024

Student protesters in Bangladesh have declared a nationwide shutdown on Thursday in response to security forces’ actions that resulted in multiple casualties. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has promised a judicial inquiry into the violence.

The protest, demanding reforms in the government job quota system, intensified after security forces’ actions left six people dead, including four students. Asif Mahmud, a key coordinator of the movement, announced on Facebook that all establishments, except hospitals and emergency services, will remain closed, and only ambulance services will be allowed to operate.

Prime Minister Hasina, addressing the nation on Wednesday, expressed deep regret over the casualties and announced a judicial inquiry committee. She urged protesters to trust the country’s apex court, which is currently deliberating the quota issue, and assured that justice will be served.

Despite the Prime Minister’s appeal, protesters remain resolute, calling for a complete shutdown on Thursday. The protestors claim that the current quota system, which reserves 56% of government jobs, is unfair to meritorious students.

The government has closed all public and private universities, schools, and colleges indefinitely, asking students to vacate dormitories. Media reports indicate that the violence continued, with security forces using rubber bullets, tear gas, and sound grenades against protesters.

UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk and Amnesty International have urged Bangladesh authorities to engage with the protesters and ensure their safety.

The protesters vow to continue their movement until their demands are met.
