At least 27 people, including 23 women, three children, and one man, were killed in a stampede during a religious event in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district on Tuesday. The tragedy occurred in Rati Bhanpur village, Sikandra Rau area, as a religious preacher addressed his followers in a specially laid tent.

Police reported that suffocation at the venue caused discomfort among attendees, leading to panic and a stampede. The hot and humid weather exacerbated the situation. “It was a satsang meeting of Bhole Baba. Temporary permission was granted for the gathering at the border of Etah and Hathras district,” said Inspector General Shalabh Mathur.

Identified victims include Ganga Devi (70), Priyanka (20), Jasoda (70), Saroj Lata (60), and two children, Kavya (4) and Ayush (8). Survivors recounted the chaos that ensued when the event ended, with the crowd rushing to leave and motorcycles blocking exits.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief and directed officials to expedite rescue and relief operations. An investigation into the incident is underway, led by ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh.
