PM Modi Slams INDIA Bloc Amid Constitution Protest

PM Modi Slams INDIA Bloc Amid Constitution Protest
  • PublishedJune 25, 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the INDIA bloc’s protest against the NDA government on the 49th anniversary of the Emergency, asserting that those who imposed it have no right to claim allegiance to the Constitution. Referring to the dark days of the Emergency, PM Modi accused the Congress of undermining basic freedoms and disregarding democratic principles.

The Emergency was imposed by former PM Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, suspending civil rights for over two years. PM Modi highlighted how dissenters were persecuted, and regressive policies were enforced during this period. He criticized the Congress for imposing Article 356 numerous times, curbing press freedom, and violating federalism.

PM Modi emphasized that despite token gestures, the Congress’s disdain for the Constitution remains evident. He pointed out that the mindset behind the Emergency persists within the party. Opposition leaders staged a protest in Parliament by brandishing copies of the Constitution, with Rahul Gandhi prominently displaying one during PM Modi’s oath-taking.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah condemned the Congress’s history of suppressing democratic voices, while BJP President J P Nadda criticized the opposition’s hypocrisy in claiming to defend democracy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the Emergency as a dark chapter in India’s democratic history.

The episode underscores ongoing tensions between the NDA and the opposition ahead of the new Lok Sabha session.
