PM Modi Inaugurates New Campus of Nalanda University in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for the institution. The modern campus, near the ancient ruins of Nalanda University, was established under the Nalanda University Act, 2010. The original Nalanda University, founded in the fifth century, was a globally renowned educational hub until its destruction in the 12th century.
Nalanda University resumed operations in 2014 from a temporary location, and construction of the new campus began in 2017. It now hosts six schools, including the School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions, and the School of Historical Studies. Supported by 17 countries, Nalanda offers 137 scholarships to international students from various nations, including Argentina, Ghana, and the USA.
The new campus, designed as a ‘Net Zero’ Green Campus, features eco-friendly facilities such as solar plants, water treatment plants, and extensive water bodies. It includes two academic blocks with 40 classrooms, two auditoriums, and a student hostel accommodating 550 students. The campus also boasts an international center, an amphitheatre, a faculty club, and a sports complex.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and ambassadors from 17 countries attended the inauguration. PM Modi, highlighting the historical significance of Nalanda, expressed optimism about the university’s role in catering to the educational needs of youth.
