Family Protests After Brother Found Dead in Drug-Ridden Village
Tension gripped the village as the body of a man, who had arrived from Nurmahal to participate in a pigeon racing event in Dhuleta village near his sister’s residence in Goraya, was discovered in the fields after 24 hours. The deceased’s relatives staged a demonstration outside the police station, expressing frustration with the administration. Vijay Kumar, the brother-in-law of the victim, Dinesh (42), stated that Dinesh, a father of three who worked as a transporter and porter, had traveled to Dhuleta for the competition on Thursday morning but did not return home. Despite efforts to report his disappearance, the police initially declined to register a complaint. The family persisted and lodged a formal complaint on Friday morning.
Subsequently, the police initiated a search, reviewing CCTV footage which revealed Dinesh accompanying a known drug trafficker from the village. Following an extensive search, Dinesh’s bloodied body was discovered in the village fields later that evening, sparking outrage among villagers and family members.
Sukhi, a village panchayat member, highlighted the rampant drug problem in the area, urging government intervention to eradicate the issue. He called for the appointment of an official to address the drug menace. The victim’s family demanded strict punishment for those responsible.
SHO Goraya Madhubala assured that forensic teams were investigating the scene and the body would undergo a post-mortem examination at Civil Hospital Phillaur to determine the cause of death. Responding to allegations of police inaction against drug trafficking, Madhubala reiterated the force’s commitment to combating the drug trade, pledging continued legal action against offenders.
