AAP Wins Sangrur, Leads in Two Seats in Punjab; Struggles in Delhi Lok Sabha Elections 2024
  • PublishedJune 5, 2024

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured a win in Punjab’s Sangrur constituency with Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer emerging victorious. The party is also leading in two other seats in the state. Despite this, AAP failed to make inroads in Delhi, where it currently governs, not winning any of the seven seats.

AAP’s performance in Delhi remains lackluster, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leads in all constituencies, with three candidates ahead by over 100,000 votes. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh acknowledged the challenging circumstances, yet emphasized the tough competition posed against the BJP, attributing the results to public discontent with BJP’s decade-long governance.

Nationwide, early trends indicate setbacks for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in traditional strongholds like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. However, the NDA is expected to secure around 290 seats, enough to form the government.

In Punjab, the AAP’s Raj Kumar Chabbewal leads in Hoshiarpur by 43,454 votes against Congress’s Yamini Gomar, while Malvinder Singh Kang is ahead in Anandpur Sahib by 11,263 votes against Congress’s Vijay Inder Singla.

The Congress maintains its influence in Punjab, with Charanjit Singh Channi winning the Jalandhar reserve parliamentary seat by a margin of 175,993 votes against BJP’s Sushil Rinku, and Amar Singh securing Fatehgarh Sahib against AAP’s Gurpreet Singh GP.

Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leads in one parliamentary constituency, and two independents, including radical preacher Amritpal Singh, are ahead in their respective seats. This diverse electoral outcome underscores the competitive political landscape in Punjab.
