High Court Acquits Dera Sacha Sauda Chief in Murder Case: A Controversial Verdict
  • PublishedJune 4, 2024

In a stunning turn of events, the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, along with four others, in the murder case of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. Singh was brutally shot dead 19 years ago, allegedly due to his involvement in circulating a letter exposing the sexual exploitation of women by Ram Rahim at the Dera headquarters.

The case took a tumultuous course, with Ram Rahim and his cohorts initially being found guilty by a special CBI court in 2021, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence. However, their fortunes changed with the recent ruling by the High Court, sparking controversy and raising questions about the judiciary’s handling of the matter.

The acquittal comes amidst Ram Rahim already serving a hefty 20-year jail term for the rape of two of his disciples. Currently incarcerated in Sunaria jail in Rohtak, Haryana, the Dera chief’s legal battles continue to captivate public attention.

The murder of Ranjit Singh and the subsequent legal saga underscore the deep-seated controversies surrounding Dera Sacha Sauda and its leader. The case also sheds light on the dangers faced by whistleblowers, as evidenced by the killing of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who exposed Ram Rahim’s alleged misdeeds.

While the High Court’s decision has brought relief to Ram Rahim and his associates, it has reignited debates about justice, accountability, and the influence of powerful religious figures in India’s socio-political landscape. The repercussions of this verdict are likely to reverberate for years to come, casting a shadow over the quest for truth and justice in the country.
