India Initiates Extradition of Mehul Choksi from Belgium; Indian Officials to Attend Proceedings
  • PublishedApril 14, 2025

India has formally requested the extradition of fugitive diamond businessman Mehul Choksi, who was arrested by Belgian authorities on April 12, 2025. The arrest comes as a significant development in the Rs 12,636 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case, in which Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi and other family members, is a key accused.

According to the Belgian Federal Public Service of Justice, Choksi is currently in custody and legal counsel has been assured to him. A team of Indian officials is preparing to travel to Belgium to attend the upcoming legal proceedings and expedite the extradition process.

Sources indicate that Choksi, who recently secured an F residency card in Belgium using his wife Preeti Choksi’s Belgian nationality, was arrested just as he was planning to flee to Switzerland under the pretext of medical treatment.

Indian authorities are confident that the evidence against Choksi will support a strong case for extradition. A detailed legal strategy is being formulated to ensure he remains in custody throughout the process.

Choksi’s lawyer has confirmed the arrest and intends to file for bail, citing his client’s poor health and ongoing cancer treatment. However, the bail hearing is expected only after a week, during which Choksi will remain in a Belgian jail.

India remains committed to bringing fugitives to justice and continues to work closely with international agencies for a fair and swift legal process.
