China Responds to US Tariff Hike with 125% Duties, Signals No Further Retaliation
  • PublishedApril 11, 2025

In a strong counter to the latest US tariff escalation, China has raised tariffs on American goods from 84% to 125%. The move comes hours after US President Donald Trump announced a hike in duties on Chinese imports to 145%, explicitly excluding China from a broader 90-day global tariff pause.

China’s Ministry of Finance condemned the US action, calling it “unilateral bullying and coercion” and a violation of international trade rules. The ministry added that while it will take firm countermeasures to protect national interests, it does not intend to retaliate further if the US continues imposing additional tariffs.

“If the US continues to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods, China will ignore it,” the ministry stated, signaling a strategic shift in its trade posture. China also filed a fresh complaint with the World Trade Organization, citing threats to global trade stability.

Chinese Premier Xi Jinping responded by urging the European Union to form a united front with Beijing against “unilateral bullying,” emphasizing joint responsibility in upholding global trade norms.

In parallel, China added 12 US companies to its export control list and placed six others on its unreliable entities list, deepening the divide between the world’s two largest economies.

As trade tensions intensify, global markets are watching closely for the next move in this escalating tariff war.
