The BJP-led Delhi government is making waves with its latest budget, unveiled on Tuesday by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in her debut presentation. A hefty ₹500 crore has been set aside to breathe new life into the Yamuna River by ensuring only treated water flows into it. This ambitious cleanup involves decentralizing 40 sewage treatment plants (STPs). Another ₹500 crore will fuel the repair and modernization of these STPs, while ₹250 crore is dedicated to replacing outdated sewer lines. “The Yamuna isn’t just a waterway—it’s our legacy. Reviving it is a promise we’re determined to keep,” Gupta declared, underscoring its place as a key manifesto pledge.
Beyond the river, the budget pours ₹9,000 crore into securing clean drinking water and sanitation for Delhiites. To tackle the city’s notorious pollution, a cutting-edge command and control center is in the works, offering real-time tracking of air quality, water pollution, noise, and waste. Environmental efforts don’t stop there—₹506 crore is allocated to the forest and environment departments, with ₹300 crore targeting pollution-busting reforms and emergency measures. Plus, ₹20 crore will empower RWAs, NGOs, and others to green up parks and public spaces under the “Delhi Parks and Garden Society” initiative.
Social security also gets a massive boost, with ₹10,047 crore directed to welfare programs. This includes ₹9,780 crore for projects under social welfare, women and child development, and SC/ST/OBC welfare departments. From sparkling rivers to cleaner air and thriving communities, this budget signals a transformative push for a healthier, greener Delhi—proof the government is all in on its poll promises.
