Apple is set to start production of AirPods in India from April, sources said. This will mark the second product category Apple manufactures in the country after iPhones.
“Production of AirPods is going to start in India. It will begin in April but will be exclusively for exports,” an industry source confirmed.
Foxconn had approved a $400 million (approximately ₹3,500 crore) investment to establish the factory in August 2023. Apple continues to dominate the global TWS (true wireless stereo) segment, holding a 23.1% market share in 2024—nearly three times higher than Samsung’s estimated 8.5%, according to Canalys.
The move comes amid concerns over potential cuts in Apple’s India production following US President Donald Trump’s proposal for reciprocal tariffs on imports from several countries, including India. Despite Apple’s recent announcement of a $500 billion investment in US manufacturing, its expansion in India signals a long-term strategy for diversifying its supply chain.
India imposes a 20% import duty on hearables and wearables, while the US has no such tariffs. The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has suggested removing import duties on US-made smartphones and accessories to encourage more investment.
Meanwhile, Apple is developing a new AirPods feature that will enable real-time translation of in-person conversations. The feature, tied to iOS 19, is expected to be part of a software upgrade later this year.
An email inquiry to Apple and Foxconn remains unanswered.
