Andhra Pradesh Govt Weighs Options for Jagan Mohan Reddy’s ₹500 Crore Rushikonda Palace
  • PublishedMarch 12, 2025

The Chandrababu Naidu-led Andhra Pradesh government faces a tough decision regarding the ₹500 crore Rushikonda Palace, an opulent structure built during former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tenure. Originally planned as an office-cum-residence, the grand estate is now embroiled in a political and environmental controversy.

India Today’s exclusive visuals reveal gold embellishments, Italian marble flooring, and four sprawling blocks spread over 10 acres. The estate also boasts paved roads, bulk water supply, and a 100 KV power substation, adding to its staggering cost. Critics allege that nearly half of Rushikonda Hill was excavated, violating Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms.

While the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) cleared the project in May 2021 for tourism development, opposition voices claim the YSRCP government misused public funds to construct a private palace.

The current TDP-led government is exploring ways to repurpose the estate, with Chief Minister Naidu accusing Jagan Mohan Reddy of financial misconduct. Some estimates suggest the total cost could exceed ₹600 crore. Former YSRCP Minister Gudivada Amarnath has defended the project, asserting that it adhered to legal guidelines.

Meanwhile, EAS Sarma, former Government of India Secretary, has called for demolition of the illegal structures and restoration of Rushikonda’s ecology. The AP government is yet to decide on the estate’s future.
