In a dramatic turn of events, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested Tarun Raju, grandson of Atria Hotel’s owner, in connection with the high-profile gold smuggling case involving Kannada actor Ranya Rao. His arrest follows Ranya Rao’s recent detention at Kempegowda International Airport, where officials seized gold worth ₹12.56 crore.
According to sources, Tarun Raju played a key role in the smuggling operation. Investigators uncovered that Ranya had contacted him while transporting gold from Dubai, leading to his arrest. He has been remanded to five-day DRI custody for further interrogation.
Authorities suspect that Tarun and Ranya were close associates in the smuggling network. Despite Ranya’s marriage to architect Jatin Hukkeri, sources allege the duo continued their illicit activities. Officials have also seized gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash from Ranya’s residence.
During court proceedings, Ranya accused DRI officials of verbal abuse and coercion. However, investigators denied these allegations, stating she remained uncooperative and silent during questioning. The court has taken note of her claims and the agency’s response.
With Ranya’s extensive travel history to Dubai—nearly 30 trips in a year—the investigation has widened to uncover the full extent of the smuggling ring. More arrests and revelations are expected in the coming days.
