US Votes Against UN Resolution on Ukraine, India Abstains

US Votes Against UN Resolution on Ukraine, India Abstains
  • PublishedFebruary 25, 2025

In a surprising shift in its foreign policy, the United States voted against a United Nations resolution demanding Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine, aligning with Moscow for the first time since the war began. Meanwhile, India, along with Argentina, China, Iran, and the UAE, abstained from the vote.

The resolution, strongly condemning Russian aggression and emphasizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity, passed with 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstentions. Despite the US opposing the resolution, Ukraine’s European allies unanimously supported it, marking three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

In a separate move, the US abstained from voting on its own competing resolution after European nations, led by France, amended the text to emphasize Russia’s role as the aggressor. The amended resolution also secured 93 votes in favor, with 73 abstentions and eight votes against.

At the UN Security Council, where resolutions are legally binding, the US-backed resolution was adopted after Russia vetoed European efforts to amend it. The shift in US policy comes amid rising tensions between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding a new dimension to global diplomatic dynamics.

The voting results indicate a decline in global support for Ukraine compared to previous resolutions, highlighting shifting geopolitical alliances.
