Vinay Sapru on Bollywood’s Need for Originality & His ‘Universe of Love’

Renowned filmmaker Vinay Sapru, known for Sanam Teri Kasam and his collaborations with Radhika Rao, has shared his perspective on Bollywood’s reliance on formulaic storytelling. In an exclusive conversation, he emphasized the need for originality in filmmaking and his vision for soul-driven cinema.
Sapru revealed that he and Rao are expanding their “universe of love”, announcing that they will release a new romance film every Valentine’s Day. “We specialize in young heartbreak love stories—a genre we deeply connect with. Our films and songs don’t feel outdated, even after years,” he said.
Criticizing Bollywood’s remake culture and overuse of trendy formulas, Sapru argued, “You cannot recreate emotions by copying them. Films should be made from the heart, not through a calculated formula.” He stressed that legends like Raj Kapoor and Manmohan Desai created timeless films because their work was rooted in authenticity, not trends.
He also questioned the obsession with remakes and formulaic dialogues, stating, “If every hero keeps delivering the same big dialogues just because someone else did it before, it won’t work. Shut your eyes, disconnect, and write from your heart.”
Sapru’s call for originality and emotional depth signals a refreshing approach to Bollywood’s evolving landscape. As he and Rao continue their journey in cinema, their commitment to soulful storytelling promises to bring back the essence of true romance on screen.
