India Open to Legitimate Return of Undocumented Migrants Amid US Immigration Crackdown: Jaishankar
  • PublishedJanuary 23, 2025

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s willingness to facilitate the legitimate return of undocumented Indian immigrants amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to legal mobility while opposing illegal migration, which he linked to activities harmful to the nation’s reputation.

Jaishankar noted that the government is still verifying the identities of Indian nationals who could face deportation and stressed the importance of adhering to proper procedures.

During talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar highlighted the need for solutions to enhance legal mobility. He flagged visa delays as a major concern, adding, “If it takes over 400 days to get a visa, the relationship isn’t well-served.”

The discussions also addressed U.S. plans to deport over 180,000 undocumented Indians. While acknowledging sensitivities around the issue, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s principled position on illegal migration remains consistent.

“India values opportunities for our talent globally but firmly opposes illegal migration,” he stated, adding that this stance aligns with fostering stronger bilateral ties.
