Justice Delivered: Sanjay Roy Convicted in RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder Case
In a high-profile case that ignited nationwide protests, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was found guilty of the brutal rape and murder of a 28-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Sealdah court, under Judge Anirban Das, delivered the verdict 57 days after the trial began, following the horrific incident on August 9 that left the medical community in shock.
The victim’s lifeless body was discovered in a seminar room, prompting an immediate outcry for justice and enhanced security for medical professionals. Roy was arrested the next day, yet he maintained his innocence, claiming he was framed.
The court convicted Roy under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with the latter carrying a maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment. Despite Roy’s protests, the judge confirmed he would have a chance to speak before the sentencing on Monday.
The trial, conducted behind closed doors, saw significant evidence from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), including CCTV footage placing Roy near the crime scene. However, the victim’s family and the Junior Doctors’ Front (JDF) expressed concerns about a possible larger conspiracy, demanding a broader investigation.
As the verdict was read, protesters outside the court demanded the harshest punishment for Roy, hoping it would serve as a deterrent. The tragic incident had previously led to a state-wide strike by junior doctors, highlighting the urgent need for improved workplace safety.
