Four Indians Granted Bail in Hardeep Nijjar’s Murder Case.
Four Indian nationals accused in the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar have been granted bail by a Canadian court. Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder following Nijjar’s assassination in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023.
The accused were arrested in May 2024 by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and faced preliminary hearings in the Surrey Provincial Court. The case has now been moved to the British Columbia Supreme Court with the next hearing scheduled for February 11, 2025.
Despite the charges, all four defendants were released under a “stay of proceedings” while awaiting trial. Court documents reveal that they are not in custody, and their status was marked as “N,” indicating that they are either out on bail or released under specific conditions.
This case gained international attention after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar’s murder, which India has vehemently denied. The ongoing case has strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India, particularly around the contentious issue of Khalistani extremism.
The Canadian government has invoked a “direct indictment,” bypassing a preliminary inquiry to expedite the trial. Meanwhile, an interim publication ban has been placed on pre-trial proceedings, limiting public access to certain case details.
