Congress and BJP Clash Over Naming of Delhi University’s New College
The decision by Delhi University to name its upcoming college in Najafgarh after Veer Savarkar has sparked a heated exchange between the Congress and BJP. The Veer Savarkar College, with an estimated budget of ₹140 crore, was approved by the university’s executive council in 2021 and is set to be a significant addition to the institution.
The controversy escalated after the Congress’ student wing criticized the decision, proposing instead that the college be named after former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away last week. They argued that Dr. Singh’s legacy as an esteemed economist and statesman deserves recognition through such a dedication.
The BJP, however, has defended the decision, emphasizing Veer Savarkar’s contributions to India’s independence movement. BJP leaders have accused the Congress of politicizing the matter, while Congress members allege the BJP is trying to push its ideological agenda through educational institutions.
This clash highlights the ongoing tussle between the two political parties over historical narratives and legacy building. Meanwhile, students and faculty have expressed mixed reactions, with some urging the focus to remain on the college’s academic goals and infrastructure development.
As construction progresses, Delhi University has yet to issue a formal statement addressing the political debate, but it remains to be seen whether the institution will reconsider its decision or proceed as planned.
