India Pays Tribute to Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
India bids a solemn farewell to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, whose last rites were conducted with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi. Singh, a distinguished economist and architect of India’s economic liberalisation, passed away on December 27, 2024. His body was brought to the Congress headquarters for a final public tribute before a procession through the capital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led tributes, joined by key leaders including BJP’s Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Congress’ Mallikarjun Kharge. Foreign dignitaries, including the King of Bhutan and Mauritius’ Foreign Minister, also paid their respects.
The Centre has declared a seven-day national mourning period, with the national flag flying at half-mast. Several states have joined in this mourning. A memorial for Singh will be built after discussions between the Centre and his family.
Singh’s contributions to India’s political and economic landscape, including his leadership in the 1991 economic crisis, and his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004, left an indelible mark on the country’s growth and development.
