West Bengal Doctors’ Forum Urges Renaming of Dorina Crossing to ‘Abhaya Crossing’.
The West Bengal Doctors’ Forum has formally requested Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to rename Dorina Crossing, a significant protest point in central Kolkata, as ‘Abhaya Crossing.’ The proposed name honors the junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital who tragically fell victim to a brutal rape and murder within the hospital premises in August. For legal reasons, the victim is referred to as “Abhaya.”
According to the forum, the name “Abhaya” transcends its dictionary definition of “a brave woman.” It has become a powerful symbol of the ongoing struggle for justice, safety, and dignity. This renaming would commemorate the victim and highlight the collective demand for accountability and reform.
The forum’s appeal aligns with ongoing protests by the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors at Dorina Crossing. These protests spotlight the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) failure to file a supplementary charge sheet against two accused, who were granted default bail by a Kolkata court.
Recent developments, including a Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) report, have cast doubt on the “scene of crime” identified during the investigation. The report suggests the victim’s body may have been relocated to the seminar hall to mislead authorities, a claim that resonates with earlier apprehensions from the medical fraternity.
The renaming of Dorina Crossing to ‘Abhaya Crossing’ would serve as a lasting tribute to the victim and a reminder of the urgent need for justice and institutional reform.
