ICC Reviews Virat Kohli-Sam Konstas Incident from Boxing Day Test
  • PublishedDecember 26, 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reviewing an on-field altercation involving Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas during Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The incident occurred during a break between overs when Kohli and Konstas appeared to collide while switching ends. Replays suggest Kohli’s actions may have been deliberate, prompting scrutiny from match officials. Konstas, with his head down adjusting his gloves, seemed unaware of the trajectory. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, commenting on the match, remarked on Kohli’s potential intent during the interaction.

An ICC source confirmed that the match referee and umpires are set to review footage and may seek explanations from both players. “If Kohli’s explanation fails to satisfy officials, disciplinary action, including demerit points, could be enforced,” stated the source. Accumulation of demerit points can lead to fines or suspensions under ICC regulations.

The incident falls under Chapter 42.1 of the MCC laws, classifying “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact” as a Level 2 offense. As custodians of the game’s laws, the MCC defines such actions as unacceptable conduct.

The ICC has yet to issue an official statement, but the incident has sparked widespread debate in the cricket community. The final decision will depend on the referee’s assessment and subsequent report.
