Environmental Crusade Lands Sonia Mann in Custody Over Budha Nallah Protest
Renowned actress and social activist Sonia Mann was arrested on Tuesday during a protest against the alarming industrial pollution affecting Budha Nallah and the Sutlej River. The protest highlighted the hazardous release of untreated wastewater from Ludhiana’s industries into Budha Nallah, leading to widespread environmental and health crises.
Sonia Mann, known for her outspoken stance on social issues, joined concerned citizens in demanding immediate action against the contamination. Protesters accused industries of discharging untreated waste directly into water bodies, a practice that has severely polluted drinking water sources, spread skin diseases and even contributed to cases of skin cancer in nearby communities.
The protest turned intense as activists raised slogans demanding government accountability. Police intervened, detaining Sonia Mann and others at Dogri police station for an entire day, citing disruption of public order.
Before her arrest, Sonia Mann stated, “The pollution of Budha Nallah is not just an environmental issue—it’s a humanitarian crisis. The contaminated water flowing into the Sutlej River is poisoning our people and future generations. We need accountability and immediate action to stop this catastrophe.”
The arrest has sparked outrage on social media, with supporters calling for her release and stricter regulations against industrial polluters. Environmental activists vowed to continue the fight, emphasising the urgent need for sustainable practices to safeguard Punjab’s water resources and public health.
