Peel Police Officer Cleared of Misconduct Allegations in Brampton Temple Incident.
Peel Regional Police today announced that Sergeant Harinder Sohi has been cleared of all misconduct allegations related to a pro-Khalistan protest on November 3, where demonstrators entered the grounds of the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton. In response to viral footage, an internal investigation confirmed that Sohi acted within his duties to defuse escalating tensions, despite widespread speculation and calls for his suspension.
The protest, occurring during Diwali weekend, involved demonstrators waving Khalistani flags and chanting anti-India slogans. Amid reports of altercations, video footage captured Sergeant Sohi in plain clothes, at one point holding a Khalistani flag. Peel Police clarified that Sohi was not endorsing any political stance but attempting to disarm an individual who resisted surrendering a weapon.
Bodycam footage reviewed by Peel Police showed Sohi approaching and disarming a protester carrying a stick. Peel Police emphasized their efforts to de-escalate the protest and to secure items that could potentially serve as weapons, thereby maintaining public safety.
Following the incident, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed concerns regarding the safety of Indian nationals in Canada. Peel Regional Police affirmed their commitment to community safety and emphasized the importance of preserving peace during heightened events.
