IMD Launches Dedicated Weather Forecasting System for Sabarimala Pilgrimage.
For the first time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has introduced a localized weather forecasting system dedicated to the Sabarimala pilgrimage, similar to its services for Amarnath and Char Dham. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Pathanamthitta district administration, is set to provide three-day forecasts and real-time “nowcasts” to help pilgrims and authorities stay prepared for varying weather conditions.
IMD Regional Director Neetha K. Gopal shared that rain gauges have been installed at Sannidhanam, Pamba, and Nilakkal to gather data for these forecasts. Temperature gauges will soon follow, addressing concerns about rising temperatures and humidity that can affect pilgrims. District personnel have been trained to manage and validate data collection for enhanced accuracy.
The IMD aims to expand this system, potentially establishing a permanent weather monitoring facility to further strengthen real-time weather management in the region. The addition of Automatic Weather Stations is also under consideration.
To support safe pilgrimage, weather updates will be distributed by the State Disaster Management Authority. Additionally, discussions are underway to integrate these updates with the “Swamy Chatbot” app, launched by the state government for pilgrim guidance.
This forecasting system, requested by local authorities, is a significant step towards ensuring pilgrim safety along the Pamba-Sannidhanam route, particularly in areas affected by past floods and landslides.
