Karnataka Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan Issues Apology for Comments on HD Kumaraswamy.
  • PublishedNovember 12, 2024

Karnataka cabinet minister Zameer Ahmed Khan has issued a public apology following recent comments he made about former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s skin color. During a campaign speech in Channapatna, Khan referred to Kumaraswamy with a term considered by many as racially insensitive. His remarks sparked criticism from various political leaders and the public, prompting Khan to clarify and apologize.

In a statement to the media, Khan expressed regret for any hurt his words may have caused, emphasizing his longstanding friendship with Kumaraswamy. Khan explained that both he and Kumaraswamy have exchanged playful remarks throughout their political careers. “We have called each other names out of affection,” Khan shared, adding that Kumaraswamy often teased him about his height, while he, in turn, commented on Kumaraswamy’s skin color. “I apologize if my words have hurt anyone’s feelings,” he added, acknowledging the sensitivities involved.

Khan’s remarks on Sunday, where he referred to Kumaraswamy as “kaliya” (black), were made while discussing CP Yogeshwar’s return to Congress, referencing Yogeshwar’s political choices and relationship with Kumaraswamy.

While apologizing, Khan insisted that his remarks were not intended to offend or influence the electoral process, stating, “If this has hurt someone, I apologize.” The incident serves as a reminder of the need for sensitivity in political discourse.
