Delhi Pollution: Capital Suffers as AQI Reaches ‘Severe’ Levels in Multiple Areas

Delhi’s air quality remained hazardous for the third consecutive day, with multiple locations reporting an AQI in the “severe” category. The average Air Quality Index (AQI) at Anand Vihar reached 448 (PM10) by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Areas like Ashok Vihar, Bawana, Dwarka, Jahangirpuri, and Mundka also recorded AQI above 400.

On Monday, Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI stood at 381, indicating “very poor” air quality, with pollution exacerbated after the Diwali festival. Experts warn that conditions may worsen, with calm winds and no significant western disturbances expected.

The Supreme Court expressed concern over the ineffective enforcement of the firecracker ban during Diwali, asking the Delhi government and police to clarify their actions. Delhi’s environment minister, Gopal Rai, has called for a review of the city’s winter action plan in response to the severe pollution levels.

Vehicular emissions, responsible for about 12.5% of Delhi’s pollution on Monday, remain the primary contributor. With stagnant winds forecasted, pollution is expected to persist in the “very poor” or “severe” range.
