The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s first session in six years witnessed intense scenes as PDP MLA Waheed Para, representing Pulwama, moved a resolution calling for the restoration of the union territory’s special status. The resolution, opposing the abrogation of Article 370, was submitted to Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, despite not being on the agenda, with a request for urgent discussion during the five-day session.
Immediately, all 28 BJP MLAs vocally opposed the motion, resulting in disruptions within the House. BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma demanded Para’s suspension, citing Assembly rules. The Speaker appealed for order, stating he would review the resolution if formally presented, though protests persisted.
National Conference MLAs criticized the BJP members for obstructing proceedings. Addressing the Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah dismissed the resolution, asserting it was “only for the cameras” and emphasizing the need for prior consultation. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that many citizens disapprove of the 2019 decision to revoke Article 370.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha affirmed his government’s commitment to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti expressed pride in Para’s initiative, tweeting her support for the resolution.
Article 370, abrogated on August 5, 2019, had granted special autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, allowing it unique constitutional provisions. Its revocation converted the region into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
