Canadian Hindus Express Outrage as Opposition Leader Cancels Diwali Participation.
The Hindu Canadian community is voicing strong condemnation of Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre’s decision to withdraw from the 24th annual Diwali celebration in Ottawa. The Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC) expressed that this move reflects a troubling perception of the Indo-Canadian community as “outsiders” in a nation that champions multiculturalism.
In a letter addressed to Poilievre, OFIC President Shiv Bhasker stated, “The sudden withdrawal of politicians from this event, prompted by the current diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, has left us feeling betrayed.” The letter emphasizes that the decision undermines the contributions of the 850,000-strong Hindu Canadian community, which is known for its educational, prosperous, and family-oriented values.
This cancellation comes amid deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Canada, following allegations of Indian involvement in targeting Khalistani leaders. Poilievre’s withdrawal has ignited conversations about systemic biases and racism, with Bhasker asserting, “This is about a much deeper problem that still exists in Canada.”
The community urges Poilievre to reconsider his position, reminding him that they will remember his actions come election time in 2025. Social media reactions have been swift, with critics labeling his decision “disheartening” and “absolutely disgraceful.” The OFIC calls for an apology, asserting that Diwali should symbolize unity, not division.
