Acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer’s original score for the highly anticipated film Dune 2 has been deemed ineligible for the 2025 Academy Awards due to an existing rule concerning pre-existing music. The score, which features a rich tapestry of sound, borrows heavily from the themes established in the original Dune score, which Zimmer also composed.
According to the Academy’s regulations, sequels and franchises must limit the use of pre-existing themes to no more than 20 percent to qualify for Best Original Score. As Dune 2 exceeds this threshold, it will not compete in this prestigious category, as reported by Variety.
Despite the setback, Zimmer expressed his indifference to the awards process. “I don’t do music for awards,” he stated. “I’m immensely proud of what we’ve collaboratively crafted with visionaries like Denis Villeneuve. This is our contribution to a larger cinematic experience.”
Dune 2, featuring a stellar cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Javier Bardem, has received both critical acclaim and commercial success since its release earlier this year. Based on Frank Herbert’s beloved novels, the film continues to captivate audiences worldwide, showcasing the extraordinary talents of its cast and crew.
