Heavy Rains Disrupt Bengaluru as Northeast Monsoon Impact Spills Over from Chennai.
  • PublishedOctober 15, 2024

Bengaluru is experiencing continuous rains due to the spillover effect of the northeast monsoon currently affecting Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. The downpour has led to waterlogging and traffic disruptions across several areas of the city, with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) taking measures to mitigate the situation.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rains with some areas expected to experience heavier rainfall from October 15 to 17. Maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted to hover around 25°C and 20°C, respectively. Traffic has been severely affected, particularly at Hebbal flyover and Okkalipura underpass, causing significant delays.

BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath convened a virtual meeting to instruct officials to stay on high alert, focusing on flood-prone areas. The BBMP has deployed special teams to manage waterlogging and ensure smooth drainage through the city’s canals. Efforts are being made to continuously clear waste around drainage grates to prevent blockages.

The BBMP’s control rooms are active, with citizens encouraged to report issues such as stagnant water, fallen trees, or flooding by calling 1533. Chief Commissioner Nath assured the public that complaints will be addressed promptly, with special teams on standby to clear fallen trees and manage other emergencies.

With rains expected to continue, Bengaluru remains on high alert, and the BBMP is actively working to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety.
